Session 1: Let's Move! - A Small Public Garden Partnering With a Mid-Sized City to Improve Community Health
Let’s Move! is a national initiative to combat childhood obesity by getting children moving and eating healthy food. Many of the activities that public gardens already do promote physical activity and good eating habits. By partnering with their local city and other organizations, gardens can increase the reach of their programs without a large increase in expense and time investment. By collaborating on health related projects both entities can positively impact their community's well being. Participants will learn about the Idaho Botanical Garden's Let's Move programs, partnerships and lessons learned.
Session 2: Captivating Kids Through Citizen Science: Using the Plant Heroes Program at Your Garden.
Preparing today’s youth to be the next generation of “First Detectors” is the key to limiting the damage caused by serious plant pest and diseases in the future. Learn how you can leverage the Plant Heroes program and resources to address these topics in youth programming at your garden! Attendees will get an overview of the Plant Heroes program followed by more detailed guidance on how to use its curriculum hub to find lesson plans. A demonstration will show how to get students involved in real citizen science by participating in the Plant Heroes Community Tree Mapping Project.
